Create and organize feeds

Creating a custom feed takes a paid plan. Opening one you have been invited to does not, on any tier, which is the distinction most of the questions here turn on.

Making a feed

There are two doors, and they make the same thing.

From your dashboard. Open Feeds. The screen is headed Feed Manager, with My Feeds ("Feeds you've created.") above Shared With Me ("Feeds others have shared with you."). Click Create Feed, give it a Feed Name, and click Create Feed again. A feed made here has no video attached to it, so Global Feed has to be on: only a global feed can exist without one.

On a free plan the button carries a Pro badge and opening it explains what a paid plan adds rather than showing the form.

From a video page. The feed tabs sit above the receipts: Public Feed, Private, Drafts, then any custom feeds you have open. The plus button at the end of the strip opens a short menu headed Available Feeds, and Create New Feed sits at the bottom of it. A feed made here can be pinned to the video you are on, or made global and shown on every video.

Organizing what is open

The strip is a working set, not a list of everything you belong to. Three custom feed tabs can be open at once, and the plus button is how you swap them:

1. Open one. Press the plus and pick a feed from Available Feeds. It becomes a tab and the receipts below switch to it.
2. Close one. The active custom tab carries a small chevron opening a Feed options menu, and Close Tab is the first item on it. Closing frees one of the three slots and does nothing to your membership: the feed is still yours to reopen from the plus.
3. Sort inside a feed. The sort control sits to the left of the tabs and applies to whichever feed is active.

The plus button names what it will do. It reads Open or create a feed when both are available to you, Open a feed when you are a member of feeds but cannot create any, and Create a feed when there is nothing left to open.

Feeds people shared with you

This is the part worth being precise about, because it used to work differently. Membership decides access, not your plan:

• The dashboard lists them. A feed you have been added to appears under Shared With Me with your role on it, something like Contributor, plus a Global tag and a member count. On a free account, exactly as on a paid one.
• The video page opens them. They appear in the plus button's Available Feeds list and become tabs like any other feed. A free member sees the plus button precisely because there is something in it to open.
• A link to one activates it. A shared receipt link carries the feed it lives in, so opening that link puts you in the feed as well as on the receipt.

The limit on that last one is worth naming: the link activates the feed when the feed is relevant to the video you are landing on, meaning a global feed, or a feed pinned to that video. A link into a member's per-video feed belonging to a different video opens the receipt without moving the tab strip.

What still takes a plan is making feeds and sharing them. Being in one, reading it, and posting to it if your role allows costs nothing.

Global or pinned to a video

• Global Feed on: the feed appears on every video page you open. Use it for a collection that spans videos, like a research thread or a shared reading list.
• Global Feed off: the feed belongs to the video you made it on and shows up only there. Use it when the grouping is about that one video.

A feed created from the dashboard has no video in the picture, so it is global by construction.
