User groups

A group is a list of people you keep, so you can point a feed or a watch party at all of them at once instead of naming everyone every time.

What a group does, and what it does not

A group hands out nothing on its own. It is a door policy. You choose a group as the audience for a feed or a party, and anyone on the list can let themselves in when they arrive. Building the list adds nobody to anything.

Everything else on this page follows from that: what a group controls happens at the door, at the moment somebody turns up.

Making a group

1. Open the feed menu on a video page and choose Manage My Groups
2. Click Make a group
3. Give it a name, and a description if you want a reminder of what it is for. Both are yours alone
4. Choose the access people get when they come in through this group, Viewer or Contributor
5. Add people by their @handle
6. Click Make group

Type at least two letters of a handle and pick the person out of the list.

• You can only find a persona whose owner has turned on Let people find this persona by @handle in their profile. It is off until they turn it on.
• A handle nobody has claimed and a handle whose owner has left that setting off give you the same answer, no matches. That is on purpose, and it means an empty result never tells you somebody is hiding.
• A group holds up to 200 people.
• Nobody is told you added them, and nothing reaches them until they arrive somewhere you pointed at the group.

Group access belongs to a persona

You add a persona, not an account. Someone who uses two personas counts as two different people here: the one you added can come in, the other cannot, even though the same person is behind both.

So if a feed or a party turns you away and you know you are on the list, switch to the persona whose handle was added and try again.

Groups made before handles existed can still hold entries added by account ID. Those work the same way. They show as an ID because there is no persona to name.

Pointing a feed or party at a group

Choose the group under Who can access? when you create or edit a feed, or under Who can join before you start a watch party.

• Only a feed's owner can do this, and only with a group they own themselves. An admin who is not the owner invites people one at a time instead. That is a real limit, not an oversight: a group belongs to one person, and the door only accepts groups belonging to whoever owns the feed.
• People arrive with the access the group gives them. Change any one person's level afterwards from the feed's member list.
• A feed points at one audience at a time, so it is one group per feed. Anyone else joins by invitation.

Changing a group later

• Add someone and they can come in from then on.
• Remove someone and they can no longer come in through the group. Whatever they already joined, they keep. Remove them from that feed's member list if you want their access gone.
• Delete the group and the same is true for everyone on it. The door closes and everyone already through it stays.

Good to know

• A person can be on as many of your groups as you like.
• A group is private to you. Nobody in it can see the group, or who else is on it.
