Teleparty vs Vid Receipts

Teleparty is the right pick for watching Netflix, Disney+ or Max in sync with friends: an extension each person installs, playback synced, group chat beside it. Vid Receipts is YouTube only, needs no extension, and leaves a timestamped, voted record on the video after everyone logs off.

If the thing you want to watch together is on Netflix, Disney+ or Max, install Teleparty and stop reading. Nothing here competes with it on the subscription services, and pretending otherwise would waste your evening.

This page is for the case where the video is on YouTube and you want more than a synchronized play button.

What Teleparty is good at

Teleparty is a browser extension. Everyone in the group installs it, one person starts the party, and the extension keeps the players in step and puts a group chat down the side. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes watching "Netflix, Youtube, Disney Plus, Max and more in sync with friends", invites you to "Join over 20 million people", and adds that "Premium users can also subscribe to unlock our iOS app, video chat, premium features like custom reactions, and 23 extra streaming services" (listing, updated 6 August 2026, read on 12 August 2026).

Three real strengths sit in that description. It crosses the services people actually pay for, which no YouTube-only tool can do. It is the incumbent, so the person you are inviting has probably heard of it or already has it. And the model is simple enough to explain in one message: install this, click the link, we start together.

The cost of the model is the install. Everyone needs the extension in the browser they are watching in, which is the moment a group plan usually falls apart. A paid subscription adds an iOS app, by the same listing, so the browser is not the only surface for someone who pays.

What a receipt adds on YouTube

A watch party here runs in a browser tab. You open the video, open Watch Along, press Start a watch party, and copy the short vdr.fyi link out of the panel. Your play, pause and seek carry to everyone who opens it. There is an extension, and it puts the same panel beside the player on youtube.com, but nobody needs it to start or join.

The difference that matters is what is there afterwards. During the party, anything you write is a receipt pinned to the exact second it is about, carrying formatted text, images, documents and embedded clips. When the party ends the party is gone and the receipts are not. They sit on the video for you, for the person you watched with, and for whoever arrives next week. On a public feed the community can vote a receipt up or push back on it, so the notes that hold up rise.

Two smaller differences follow from the same design. Everyone in a party is Masked by default, wearing a made-up two-word name with no profile and no followers behind it, so an open party does not put anybody's account on display. And a friend without an account is not a dead end: on a party that takes anonymous riders, the join poster offers Join without signing in next to Sign in and join.

Two different jobs. The top rows are Teleparty's.

The "not what it does" cells are a category difference rather than a gap in the product. Teleparty is not trying to leave a record on a film; it is trying to get eight people through one at the same time, and the "9,000,000 users" counted in the header of the store listing above suggest it does that well. The "20 million" in the same listing is the invitation in its blurb rather than a count of installs, which is why this paragraph does not use it.

Two cells say "not stated in their listing" because the store listing is the readable first-party source we checked, and it does not answer those questions. We would rather leave a hole in a table than fill it with a guess about somebody else's product.

Which one to open tonight

Choose Teleparty for a film night on a service you subscribe to, with people who will happily install a browser extension.

Choose a watch party here for a YouTube video you will want to argue about afterwards: a talk, a match, a review, a two-hour interview where somebody says something at 41:12 that you will want to point at again. The party gets you through it together. The receipts are what you keep.

Invite a friend to a watch party takes about a minute, or read how a watch party compares to every other way of watching YouTube together.

Why Vid Receipts

Vid Receipts is rich note-taking for video. Pin notes to the exact second with images, documents, and embedded clips, then keep them private, share them with your team, or publish them to the community. Here is how it compares to comments, note apps, and review tools, and when each one fits.

How do I watch YouTube together with friends?

Five things work today: a sync extension like Teleparty, an Activity inside a Discord call, a web room like Watch2Gether or Kosmi, a phone app like Rave, or a watch party here, where a link puts everyone on the same play, pause and seek. YouTube's own peer feature, live sharing in Google Meet, is Android only and is being withdrawn.

Watch2Gether vs Vid Receipts

Watch2Gether opens a web room in about a minute with no account, and gives you a synchronized player, chat, a playlist and webcam in it. Its feature list names YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and SoundCloud, while its homepage also claims Netflix, Amazon and Disney. Vid Receipts is YouTube only and leaves timestamped receipts on the video after the room empties.

Invite a friend to a watch party

Open the video, click Watch Along, and click Start a watch party. The panel shows a QR code, a short vdr.fyi link, and a Copy link button. Send your friend that link and they land on a join screen, signed in or not, and press play with you.

Stay anonymous with masks

A mask is a throwaway name like Quiet Otter that the product picks for you. It belongs to that one watching session, carries no follower graph, and can never be followed. A persona is the opposite: a lasting identity with its own followers. Unmasking swaps one for the other.
