Discord Watch Together vs Vid Receipts

Discord Watch Together is an Activity inside a voice call: your friends are already there, the voice channel is already open, and you all see the same YouTube video at the same time. Vid Receipts is a link anyone can open, and it leaves timestamped receipts on the video afterwards.

If your friends already live in a Discord server, Discord Watch Together is the shortest path to watching a YouTube video together, and it is a fair first choice. The voice channel is open, nobody installs anything new, and the group is already assembled.

This page is about the other half of the evening: what is left of it tomorrow.

What Discord gives you

Watch Together is one of Discord's Activities. Discord's own description is a single line, "Enjoy the same YouTube video at the same time", and it runs in "Voice chat in either a Server or DM call" on desktop, web and mobile (Discord Activities, posted 15 March 2023 and carrying an editor's note that the article covers "Discord-published Activities up to June 2024"; read on 12 August 2026).

Take the date seriously when you read the rest of this section. That post is the newest first-party description of the Activity we could find, it is more than three years old, and Discord ships changes it does not blog about. Everything below describes what the post says, not what we watched happen this week.

That is a short description for a good reason: the surrounding features are Discord's, not the Activity's. Voice is already running before anyone picks a video. The group is already in the room. Nobody has to be sold on a link.

What we are not going to tell you is how the queue and the playback controls behave. Those details live in a support article we could not read directly, and repeating a mechanic we have not verified is how a comparison page ends up wrong on the internet forever. Discord's own help is the place to check who controls the player before you plan an evening around it.

What a watch party here does differently

A party here is a link rather than a room you have to be a member of. Open the video, open Watch Along, press Start a watch party, and the panel gives you a short vdr.fyi link, a Copy link button and a QR code. Anyone who opens it lands on a poster showing the video, who started the party and how many people are in it, and joins with one press. Your play, pause and seek carry to all of them.

No account is needed when the host's door allows it. The Who can join row under the button sets that door. On a party that takes anonymous riders, someone signed out gets Join without signing in as well as Sign in and join. On a party set to Followers, Friends or a group, each arrival is checked and an account is required.

Voice exists here too, with a different shape. When the host turns voice on, listening is one tap and never touches your microphone. Speaking needs a mic seat from the host, two in a free party and four in a paid one. Every speaker gets a volume slider that is yours alone, and captions are transcribed in the speaker's own browser, so no audio is sent anywhere to be captioned. Turning voice on for a party anyone can walk into needs a paid plan; a private or unlisted party does not.

And the video keeps what you noticed. A receipt is a note pinned to one second, holding formatted text, images, documents and clips. Write one while the call is running and it is still on the video next month, along with anyone else's. On a public feed people vote them up or push back on them.

The last three rows are a difference in purpose. Watch Together is built to keep a group of friends in one place, and being inside Discord is the whole advantage rather than a limitation.

Use both, honestly

There is nothing stopping you from doing exactly that. Keep the call in Discord if that is where everyone is, and open the video here so the moments worth keeping land on it. The two do not fight.

If you want the party and the record in the same tab, start one on any video and send the link into your channel. Voice and camera in a party covers what talking here involves, including the parts that are free and the one part that is not.

Why Vid Receipts

Vid Receipts is rich note-taking for video. Pin notes to the exact second with images, documents, and embedded clips, then keep them private, share them with your team, or publish them to the community. Here is how it compares to comments, note apps, and review tools, and when each one fits.

How do I watch YouTube together with friends?

Five things work today: a sync extension like Teleparty, an Activity inside a Discord call, a web room like Watch2Gether or Kosmi, a phone app like Rave, or a watch party here, where a link puts everyone on the same play, pause and seek. YouTube's own peer feature, live sharing in Google Meet, is Android only and is being withdrawn.

Teleparty vs Vid Receipts

Teleparty is the right pick for watching Netflix, Disney+ or Max in sync with friends: an extension each person installs, playback synced, group chat beside it. Vid Receipts is YouTube only, needs no extension, and leaves a timestamped, voted record on the video after everyone logs off.

Invite a friend to a watch party

Open the video, click Watch Along, and click Start a watch party. The panel shows a QR code, a short vdr.fyi link, and a Copy link button. Send your friend that link and they land on a join screen, signed in or not, and press play with you.

Turn on voice or camera in a party

Voice is on from the moment a party opens, and anyone in it can listen with one tap and no microphone prompt. The first four people to arrive hold a mic seat; the host hands out the rest. Every speaker gets a volume slider that is yours alone, captions are transcribed on the speaker's device, and camera needs a private party, which is what Followers, Friends or A group gives you.

Watch Along

See who else is watching, press play together in a watch party, and chat while you watch.
