How do I watch YouTube together with friends?

You want to watch the same video as someone in another house, at the same second, and say things to each other while it plays. Five kinds of tool do that today: a browser extension that syncs playback, an Activity inside a Discord call, a web room you open in a tab, a phone app, or a watch party here, where you send a link and everyone follows your play, pause and seek.

One thing to say plainly before anything else: this page is about YouTube. If the film you want to watch together is on Netflix or Disney+, two tools claim that ground. Teleparty names those services in its Chrome listing. Watch2Gether's homepage says "Services like Vimeo, Netflix, Amazon, Disney & Co are also supported", though the feature list further down the same page names only YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and SoundCloud, so check the one you need before you plan the evening around it. Everything below is the YouTube case.

What YouTube itself gives you

Three YouTube features sit near co-watching. Only one of them is two friends pressing play, and it is on its way out.

Premieres are the scheduled kind. YouTube's help page describes them as a way for "you and your viewers" to "watch and experience a new video together in real time", with live chat and a countdown (Premiere a new video). That is a creator broadcasting to an audience, once, on a video nobody has seen yet.

Watch With is newer and also creator-to-audience: creators "react to live events with commentary and real-time reactions", which YouTube introduced as watching Coachella "alongside your favorite creator" (YouTube blog, April 2025). It is real rather than a pilot label, with its own traffic source in creator analytics.

Live sharing in Google Meet is the peer version, and it is the one to know about. The help page still describes it in the present tense, "You can use Google Meet to watch YouTube videos with others through live sharing on Android devices", while carrying a notice reading "This feature will be removed in August". It is "currently available on Android only", requires a YouTube Premium member to start the session, and the page recommends screen presenting instead (Use Google Meet to watch YouTube videos with others, read on 7 August 2026 and re-checked on 12 August 2026, when the notice still read the same way; it names a month without a year).

So once that removal lands, YouTube has no built-in way for two people to watch an ordinary video together. Everything below is somebody else's software.

The tools people use instead

Teleparty is the one most people mean by "watch party". It is a browser extension, each viewer installs it, and it syncs playback and adds group chat across streaming sites. Its Chrome listing describes watching "Netflix, Youtube, Disney Plus, Max and more in sync with friends", invites you to "Join over 20 million people", and says "Premium users can also subscribe to unlock our iOS app, video chat, premium features like custom reactions, and 23 extra streaming services" (Chrome Web Store listing, updated 6 August 2026, read on 12 August 2026). The subscription services are its real advantage and nothing here competes with it there.

Discord Watch Together is an Activity you launch inside a call. Discord's own description is one line, "Enjoy the same YouTube video at the same time", and it runs in "Voice chat in either a Server or DM call" on desktop, web and mobile (Discord Activities, posted 15 March 2023, carrying an editor's note that the article covers "Discord-published Activities up to June 2024"; read on 12 August 2026). That post is the newest first-party description we found, and it is old enough that the Activity may have moved on since. If your friends are already in a Discord server, the voice channel is already open and nobody has to be talked into a new tool. That is a genuine advantage and it is why the Discord route is so popular.

Watch2Gether is a web room. You open a room in a tab with no account, and the site describes a synchronized player, integrated chat, playlists and webcam. Its homepage opens with "With Watch2Gether you can watch YouTube together" and adds that "Services like Vimeo, Netflix, Amazon, Disney & Co are also supported"; the feature list on the same page is narrower, "Enjoy content from YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and SoundCloud" (w2g.tv, read on 12 August 2026). On YouTube, which is what both statements agree on, it is the fastest of the group to start from nothing.

Kosmi does browser rooms too, with voice, games and screen sharing in them (kosmi.io). Rave is the mobile-first one, an app that syncs viewing across YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video and others (Google Play listing).

Read the bottom three rows as a difference in category rather than a missing feature. None of these tools is trying to leave a record behind; they are trying to get a group through a video at the same time, and they do that.

What a watch party here does

Open a video, open Watch Along, and press Start a watch party. The panel hands you a short vdr.fyi link, a Copy link button and a QR code, and from then on your play, pause and seek carry to everyone who joins. A row under the button called Who can join decides the door: everyone, your followers, your friends, one of your groups, or invite only.

Four things follow from that, and they are the reasons to pick this over the tools above.

A link is enough, and often an account is not. Someone opening your link lands on a poster showing the video, who started the party and how many people are already in it, then presses one button. Signed out on a party that takes anonymous riders, that button is Join without signing in, and it works. A party set to Followers, Friends or a group checks each arrival instead, so those need an account.

Everyone is anonymous unless they choose otherwise. You arrive Masked, wearing a two-word name the product picks, like Quiet Otter. A mask has no profile and no followers and cannot be followed, and a fresh one is drawn each time you appear, so two of your sessions cannot be tied together by the name. Masks covers the rest, including what happens when somebody asks to follow one.

You can talk, and captions never send your audio anywhere. When the host turns voice on, listening is one tap and never asks for your microphone. Speaking needs a mic seat from the host. Captions are transcribed in the speaker's own browser and only the text reaches the party.

What you noticed stays on the video. This is the part no sync tool does. Anything you write during the party is a receipt, pinned to the second it is about, holding formatted text, images, documents and clips. When the party ends the receipts are still there, on the video, for the two of you and for whoever turns up next. On a public feed people can vote a receipt up or push back on it.

Starting a party, joining one, and talking in a private or unlisted party are free. Turning voice on for a party anyone can walk into needs a paid plan.

Where this is not the answer

• It is YouTube only. No Netflix, no Disney+, no Max.
• There is no list of live parties to browse. An open party is found by people already on its video and by anyone holding the link, and that is the whole audience.
• Party chat is not kept. It is live and it goes when the party ends. Receipts are the part that stays, which is the trade on purpose.
• Camera needs a private party, which is stricter than any party you can start from the panel today. Watch2Gether will give you webcam in a room in about a minute; we will not.
• Watch Along never appears on videos marked as made for kids, so those cannot host a party at all.
