Create your first receipt

A receipt is a timestamped annotation on a YouTube video, your way of pinning context, highlights, or commentary to a specific moment. Here's how to make your first one.

Here's an interactive example of a finished receipt, try clicking the vote buttons to see how voting works:

At this timestamp, the speaker makes a key point about data privacy that contradicts their earlier statement at 1:15. Worth comparing both moments.

Step by step

  1. Paste a YouTube URL: Use the video URL bar at the top of the app. Paste any YouTube video link and hit enter. The video will load right in the app.

    Paste a YouTube link:

Paste a video or playlist link, the Watch button lights up once it's a valid YouTube URL.

  2. Watch the video: Play the video and find a moment you'd like to annotate. It could be a key quote, an interesting claim, a funny moment, anything worth highlighting.

  3. Click "Add Receipt": When you're ready, click the Add Receipt button. This opens the receipt editor.

  4. Write your annotation: Use the rich text editor to write your receipt. You can format your text with bold, italics, and more. You can even add images and GIFs to make your receipt stand out.

  5. Check the timestamp: The timestamp is automatically captured from where the video is currently playing. If you need to adjust it, you can change it manually in the editor. This is how your receipt stays linked to the exact moment in the video.

  6. Choose where to save: Pick a destination for your receipt:

    • Public Feed: Everyone can see it. Great for sharing insights with the community.
    • Private Feed: Only you can see it. Perfect for personal notes.
    • Drafts: Save it as a work in progress and come back to finish it later.
  7. Click Save: Your receipt is now attached to that moment in the video.
